Lexus TX 350 vs TX 500h: Which Three-Row Lexus Fits You?

If you’re looking at a Lexus TX, choosing between the TX 350 and TX 500h is about more than gas versus hybrid.

Both give you a true three-row Lexus SUV, but they have very different personalities. The TX 350 is the more traditional choice, while the TX 500h F SPORT Performance combines a turbocharged engine, hybrid system and performance-focused all-wheel drive.

I’m a Sales Experience Manager at Park Place Lexus Grapevine, and this is how I’d help a customer understand the difference before deciding which TX to look for.

Specifications and equipment can change by model year. Verify the actual vehicle you’re considering before you decide.

Why Choose the TX 350?

The TX 350 is where I’d start if your priority is a comfortable, spacious three-row Lexus for everyday family use and you don’t specifically need the additional performance equipment of the TX 500h.

It also gives you more drivetrain and trim choices. The TX 350 is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and across several equipment levels.

That flexibility can make it easier to focus your money on the features you actually care about.

Why Choose the TX 500h?

The TX 500h isn’t simply a TX 350 with better gas mileage.

It’s an F SPORT Performance model with a 366-horsepower turbo-hybrid system, DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and Dynamic Rear Steering.

I’d look at the TX 500h if you want your three-row SUV to have a more performance-oriented character and the additional power matters to you.

Is the TX 500h Better on Gas?

Don’t choose between these two based only on the word “hybrid.”

The TX 500h hybrid system is designed to combine electrification with significantly more performance. Fuel economy can still be part of the comparison, but the TX 500h’s additional power and performance hardware are major reasons for choosing it.

Compare the complete vehicles, not just the powertrain labels.

What About the TX 550h+?

There’s a third TX powertrain: the TX 550h+.

The TX 550h+ is a plug-in hybrid that combines a 3.5-liter V6 with Lexus’s plug-in hybrid system.

Unlike the TX 500h, it can be externally charged and can drive using stored battery power.

If you’re specifically interested in a TX 550h+, contact me about the current situation rather than assuming one is readily available.

Which TX Is Better for a Family?

All three TX powertrains were designed around three-row use, so I’d look beyond simply asking which one is “best.”

Think about how you’ll actually use it:

  • How often will adults use the third row?
  • Do you prefer captain’s chairs or another seating configuration?
  • How much cargo do you regularly carry?
  • Is performance important to you?
  • Do you want a traditional gasoline vehicle, hybrid or plug-in hybrid?

Lexus lists 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is one reason the TX works differently from many smaller three-row luxury SUVs.

Premium vs Luxury

After choosing a powertrain, equipment becomes the next decision.

Don’t automatically buy the highest trim.

Make three lists:

  • Must have — features you absolutely want.
  • Would be nice — features you’d enjoy but wouldn’t reject a vehicle over.
  • Don’t want — colors, equipment or configurations you’d rather avoid.

Send me those lists and I can help narrow down which TX configuration makes sense instead of making you memorize every package.
