Lexus GX 550 Buying Guide for Dallas-Fort Worth

Shopping for a Lexus GX 550 can get confusing pretty quickly. Premium or Premium+? Luxury or Overtrail? Do you need a third row? And what happens when the exact GX you want isn’t sitting on the lot?

I work with Lexus buyers every day at Park Place Lexus Grapevine. This page is here to help you understand the GX lineup before you spend time chasing the wrong vehicle.

Which Lexus GX 550 Is Right for You?

The GX 550 comes in six grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail and Overtrail+.

Here’s the simple way I explain them.

Premium

The starting point of the GX lineup. You still get the GX’s twin-turbo V6, full-time four-wheel drive and the basic capability people are buying a GX for without moving into the more expensive trims.

Premium+

This is one of the trims I expect many everyday GX shoppers to compare closely. It builds on Premium with additional comfort and convenience equipment while keeping the traditional GX layout.

Luxury

Luxury moves the GX further toward premium comfort and equipment. It’s aimed more at the buyer who wants an upscale daily-driving GX than someone specifically shopping for the Overtrail’s additional off-road hardware.

Luxury+

Luxury+ sits at the top of the luxury-focused side of the GX family and adds more premium equipment.

Overtrail

Overtrail takes the GX in a different direction. It’s the more off-road-focused version, with equipment including E-KDSS, an electronically controlled locking rear differential and additional ground clearance.

Overtrail+

Overtrail+ keeps that off-road focus while adding additional premium features.

GX Premium vs Premium+

This is one of the comparisons I’d make first if you’re planning to use your GX primarily as a luxury SUV rather than specifically wanting the Overtrail equipment.

Both give you the basic GX formula: body-on-frame construction, twin-turbo V6 and full-time four-wheel drive.

The decision comes down to whether the additional comfort and convenience equipment in Premium+ matters enough to you to justify moving up.

Don’t choose a trim just because it’s more expensive. Tell me the features you actually care about and I’ll help you figure out which trim contains them.

GX Luxury vs Overtrail

These two GX versions are designed around different priorities.

Luxury

Luxury is the direction I’d look if premium interior features and everyday road use are higher priorities.

Overtrail

Overtrail is where I’d look if the additional off-road hardware matters to you. Overtrail models include features such as E-KDSS and an electronically controlled locking rear differential. They also have additional ground clearance compared with the other GX grades.

Neither approach is automatically better. It depends on what you intend to do with the vehicle.

Do You Need a Third Row?

This is important because not every GX is configured the same way.

Premium, Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+ can accommodate up to seven occupants. Overtrail and Overtrail+ are five-passenger models.

If captain’s chairs are important to you, tell me that from the beginning. Second-row seating configuration can make a big difference when we’re looking for the right GX.

If you’re regularly carrying six or seven people, an Overtrail probably shouldn’t be where you start your search.

What’s Under the Hood?

The GX 550 uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive.

Properly configured GX models can tow more than 9,000 pounds. Exact towing capacity depends on the specific grade and configuration, so verify the rating of the actual vehicle if towing is important to you.

2026 vs 2027 Lexus GX

Lexus has now announced the 2027 GX.

The basic GX formula remains largely the same, but Lexus made several equipment updates for 2027. For example, SmartAccess four-door and tailgate entry becomes standard across all grades, while Luxury, Luxury+ and Overtrail+ receive standard ventilated rear outboard seats.

The 2026 GX starts at $68,335 including delivery, processing and handling. The newly announced 2027 GX starts at $69,085 including delivery, processing and handling.

If you’re deciding between model years, contact me rather than making the decision from MSRP alone. Actual vehicle availability and equipment can matter more than the difference on paper.

Finding a GX 550 in Dallas-Fort Worth

Here’s where shopping for a GX is different from simply building one online.

Availability changes. Certain combinations of trim, exterior color, interior color and options can be much harder to find than others.

If you already know what you want, send me:

  • Trim
  • Exterior colors you’d accept
  • Interior colors you’d accept
  • Must-have options
  • Features you DON’T want
  • How flexible you are

I’ll help you understand what we’re looking for and the current situation at Park Place Lexus Grapevine.

I won’t promise you a vehicle that doesn’t exist or give you a made-up delivery date just to get your information.

Trading Your Current Vehicle?

Your trade is part of the overall deal, not a separate afterthought.

If you have a vehicle to trade, we can look at that while we’re working on your GX search so you have a clearer picture of the complete transaction.
